The most common reason for this problem is that you need to set the default language currency to match the default localization currency.

1. Note the default localization currency code under Admin-->Localization-->Currencies. For example, for US dollars it would be USD
2. Browse to Admin-->Tools->Define Languages and then click on the file and "english.php" and browse until you find the row labeled "LANGUAGE_CURRENCY"
3. Set the value of this entry to the default localization currency code you noted in step 1.

You should now notice that your store displays the correct item prices..
